About Dr. Black

Dr. Julia Black is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist offering empathetic, comprehensive, and individualized psychiatric care to adults in New York City.

With advanced training at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), McLean Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, she provides a tailored approach to diagnostic evaluations, medication management, and therapy. Her practice is designed for individuals seeking a thoughtful, holistic approach to psychiatric treatment—one that considers patients within the context of their families, relationships, strengths, and social structures to help them achieve their personal goals.

Dr. Black specializes in treating anxiety and mood disorders, personality disorders, neurodevelopmental differences such as autism and ADHD, and trauma-related conditions. Her expertise and research focus primarily on:

  • College-aged and young adults

  • Individuals navigating complex life transitions such as school or career shifts, family planning, infidelity, divorce, parenthood, chronic illness, and grief

  • Adults of all ages who have experienced trauma, including childhood abuse or neglect, domestic and sexual violence, or service-related trauma

Her therapeutic approach integrates psychodynamic principles with evidence-based treatments, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT). She also offers collaborative care with other specialists and therapists, alongside thoughtful medication management when appropriate.

Dr. Black is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She previously founded an organization that provided group therapy for survivors of sexual and domestic violence and has worked extensively with individuals with developmental and learning differences. She has presented at national conferences on topics including the treatment of childhood abuse and neglect, trauma in adulthood, and models for integrating psychiatric care into primary care settings.
