Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication, sensory processing, and patterns of behavior and interests. Autism exists on a spectrum, meaning that individuals experience a wide range of strengths, challenges, and support needs. Many autistic individuals lead fulfilling lives and contribute unique perspectives and abilities to their communities.
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder affects how individuals perceive and interact with the world. It involves differences in social communication and interaction, including challenges with understanding social cues, maintaining conversations, or navigating social relationships. Many autistic individuals also experience sensory sensitivities—being over- or under-responsive to sounds, lights, textures, or other sensory input—and may engage in repetitive behaviors or have highly focused interests.
ASD is typically identified in childhood, though many individuals, particularly those with less obvious presentations or strong compensatory skills, may not be diagnosed until adulthood. Late diagnosis is especially common among women and girls, who may "mask" or camouflage their autistic traits.

My Approach to Treatment
I work with autistic adults using a neurodiversity-affirming approach that respects autism as a valid neurological difference rather than a deficit. My goal is to support each person in living authentically while addressing any co-occurring mental health concerns and helping them navigate a world not always designed with neurodivergent individuals in mind.
Comprehensive Assessment: For individuals seeking diagnosis or clarification, I provide thorough psychiatric evaluations that explore developmental history, current functioning, strengths, and challenges. I also screen for commonly co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, ADHD, or trauma.
Mental Health Support: Many autistic individuals experience anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions, sometimes related to the stress of navigating a neurotypical world, experiences of rejection or misunderstanding, or sensory and social overwhelm. I provide medication management and therapy to address these co-occurring concerns.
Therapeutic Approaches: I incorporate approaches tailored to each individual's needs, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy adapted for autistic individuals, support with social skills and communication when desired, strategies for managing sensory sensitivities and emotional regulation, and help navigating relationships, work, and daily life challenges.
Holistic and Contextual Care: I understand autistic individuals within the context of their families, relationships, and social environments. Treatment may involve working with family members to improve understanding and support, collaborating with therapists, educators, or occupational therapists, and advocating for accommodations in school or workplace settings when appropriate.
Affirmation and Empowerment: I believe in celebrating neurodiversity and helping each person identify and build on their strengths while developing strategies for areas of challenge. My approach emphasizes self-acceptance, self-advocacy, and finding communities and environments where autistic individuals can thrive.
